PayPal reported second-quarter 2026 results showing a return to growth alongside continued pressure on profitability.
The company posted revenue of $8.7 billion, up 5 percent year-over-year, while total payment volume rose 10 percent to $486.4 billion. Payment transactions increased 8 percent to 6.8 billion, and active accounts grew just 0.3 percent to 439 million. Operating cash flow more than doubled to $2.0 billion, while free cash flow jumped 157 percent to $1.78 billion.
Despite the growth in volume, profitability declined. GAAP net income fell 12 percent to $1.10 billion, and operating margin slipped to 16.4 percent from 18.1 percent a year earlier.
The near-flat growth in active accounts points to a shift in strategy: rather than pursuing new user acquisition, PayPal is focused on driving higher transaction activity among its existing user base.
The company’s balance sheet showed continued strength, with $1.5 billion in share buybacks during the quarter and $15.3 billion in cash against $13.4 billion in debt. PayPal also raised its full-year non-GAAP EPS guidance to approximately $5.38.
The upward revision to guidance suggests management is confident about sustaining this momentum. The key question now is whether PayPal can convert this volume growth into stronger margins in the quarters ahead.
